Post by patrick11 on Tue 13 Dec 2011 - 11:26

Hi, All Smile

A bit off topic, but i think you may appresiate why i have posted this

After suffering three heart attacks since September this year and being put on various medication, I Though I had better read up on the side effects of the medication. as i was not feeling to chippa when takeing the medication, I have posted this not to persuade you into anything, but for you to make your own minds up,

After reading through this lot, I know what i am going to do, Please do Read Especialy Page 23 onwards Re Dementia was your relative on statins before dementia took over??,

My mother was. But i will say this she also had a history of not eating to well over the years as do many ageing people, Thus she would have a loss of cholesterol coupled with years of taking statins would have reduced her cholesterol even further, could this have been the cause of dementia setting in?? Read Page 23 Make your own mind up

After reading this It helped me make my mind up

Mick

Mick I'm on them because I have Diabetes and high cholestrol seems to go hand in glove with that. I am on a Diabetic Forum as well and the majority of those peeps absolutely refuse to take statins !! mainly because of ' brain fog ' as they call it. I also have Fibromyalgia which can also cause ' fibro fog ' [ a similar thing ] but must admit that I have not had any more than was usual [ for me ] than I did before Statins.

My Dad had a major stroke at an early age so I have had to weigh up the pro's and cons. Statins can also bring on muscle weakness as well [ which I also have ] but the GP has said that this is nothing to do with Statins.

Mum was never on Statins and she started with Fronto Temporal Dementia in late 2002. She also did not eat a great deal I think once Dad had passed she missed him so much that she just seemed to go downhill from there. You must do what you think is right and thanks for alterting us to the side effects of this med. flower

Hello Patrick11: Thank you for the link to the article on Cholesterol...will be taking it with me to my GP later this week, she wishes to discuss my Cholesterol test results!!!!! Could not have been better timing. I really don't know what to believe about the benefits or side effects from the administration of statins...opinions are very divided. Speaking to a lady homoeopathic healer who in her circle of friends are numerous Medical Doctors...not one of them agree with the prescribing of statins....and not one of them take it themselves even though they have what would be medically considered a cholesterol problem....so it is a very difficult subject to have any definitive opinion on because those giving advice usually have a vested interest! Even the trials carried out on new (and old )drugs are more often than not financed by the drug companies keen to get them licensed for use. Just remembered serious discussion with a Cardiologist a year ago when I questioned their benefit....Cardiologist stated the benefit of statins is not just to lower cholesterol but they have an anti-inflammatory effect on the inner lining of the arteries, thus lessening the chance of bits of cholesterol detaching itself from the walls of the otherwise inflamed arteries and the consequence of a coronary thrombosis resulting. This is something I believe should be considered by anyone who has previously suffered a heart attack or suffers from arteriosclerosis and hypertension. Often arteriosclerosis and hypertension are a precursor to a heart attack. I look forward to the thoughts and experience of others on this subject. We do not have a vested interest.... study

I have been taking statins for several years.
It was my privilege to be on the Anglo Scandinavian Cardiac Outcomes Trial (ASCOT) some years ago (about 10+?, lasting for about 4 years?). This carefully controlled trial was the catalyst for GP's being encouraged to prescribe statins. The trial was a really positive experience - I've never had such wonderful medical care - all sorts of things, mostly but not all associated with the heart. It showed a marked decrease in deaths by heart attacks for those taking statins. My GP is convinced of their value.
